DAS

If you are over 21 years of age and wish to learn to ride a large machine to acquire an unrestricted licence for any size machine after you have passed your test, then this route has been designed to cater for your requirements

Generally, if you have regular experience of riding smaller machines in the past, you may start your Direct Access route by undertaking your CBT training on a large motorcycle, usually about 500cc. This may well be the option to suit you.

If you do not have this experience, then CBT is taken on a 125cc motorcycle and we phase in your conversion to the larger DAS machines at the next stage. The Minimum Test Vehicle (MTV) for a Direct Access practical test is a power output of 46.6 Brake Horsepower or 35 kilowatts (about 500cc). At ACE we use Honda CB500 machines (see above) that are renowned for their friendly attributes which include a good turning circle, low centre of gravity (helps balance at low speeds) and a comfortable seating position which can assist people of a smaller stature.

Training at DAS level requires a qualified instructor who is assessed specifically by the DSA for this type of instruction and who must accompany you at all times in radio contact whilst on the road.

Your training will reflect the fact that you are riding a large machine and we have a comprehensive training schedule to enable you to pass the DSA large motorcycle test and beyond.

The test itself is designed to check your ability to control the large motorcycle safely through a number of set exercises and over a varied route which encompasses built up areas and national speed limit open roads.

Throughout you test preparation you will increase your skill and knowledge levels and will settle in to riding at a higher level..
